Report: Australia A vs India A – Day 4

The first four-day match between Australia A and India A ended in a draw at the Allan Border field in Brisbane. While both teams got off to a shaky start in their first innings, they were helped to massive totals by their lower middle-order batsmen. While Naman Ojha’s unbeaten double-century salvaged the visitors, Mitchell Marsh’s double-ton revived the hosts to help pull off a draw. (Also Read: Report: Australia A vs India A – Day 3)

With the distant possibility of a result, India A posted 285 for five in their second innings on the fourth day, courtesy some stellar batting performances from Naman Ojha and Ambati Rayudu. Ojha and Rayudu remained not out on 101 and 100 respectively until the end of day’s play. (Also Read: Report: Australia A vs India A – Day 2)

 Earlier in the day, Australia added 12 runs to their overnight total before being bowled out for 534 with a 59-run first innings lead. Jasprit Bumrah sent back Cameron Boyce for 27 to end the hosts’ innings. (Also Read: Report: Australia A vs India A – Day 1)

Robin Uthappa and Lokesh Rahul then put together 22 runs until Ben Cutting struck to send Uthappa packing. 31 runs later, Moises Henriques accounted for Jiwanjot Singh to give the home team another breakthrough. The No.3 bat edged the tall pacer to Sam Whiteman behind the stumps to depart for 19. India A captain Manoj Tiwary was the next to walk back as he was trapped leg before by Chadd Sayers for a duck.

 With his departure Karun Nair joined Rahul in the middle and an over later, lunch was called with India A on 64 for three. In his first over of the second session, Sayers removed Nair and soon followed up with the wicket of Rahul to leave the visitors on 86 for two. However, Naman Ojha and Ambati Rayudu took the innings forward and helped the team reach 157 for five at tea.

While Ojha continued where he had left from in the previous innings, Rayudu too joined the party as he played the opposition bowlers with ease, slowly inching towards his century. He brought up the three-figure mark with a boundary off Boyce on the off side. Batting together the pair had added 199 runs in an unbroken stand until the match was called off soon after Ojha brought up his century. The wicketkeeper batsman struck Peter Forrest for a six over long-on to enter the nineties and swept him over square-leg to reach his hundred with which the umpires called the game off.

Propelled by Rohit Sharma’s magnificent double-century, India marched to a 153-run win in Kolkata. While Eden Gardens celebrated 150 years, Rohit lit-up the stadium with a well paced 264 off 173 to make the occasion memorable.
