Report: India vs Sri Lanka (Women) – 1st T20I, Vizianagaram
With a three-wicket win over India, Sri Lanka women took a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series. Chasing 148, they attained the target with a ball to spare, thus registering their first victory since their arrival in the country. Opting to field first, SL restricted India Women to 147 for three at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam. Opening the batting for India, Mithali Raj (67) helped the team set a competitive target by carving two significant partnerships with Anagha Deshapande and Harmanpreet Kaur.
Anagha Deshpande was run out after a 71-run opening stand with the skipper, while Kaur then joined Raj and stitched a 67-run partnership.
Oshadi Ranasinghe struck to end the second-wicket partnership by removing the Indian captain. And couple of runs later, she claimed Jhulan Goswami with two overs still left in the innings. Kaur, who remained unbeaten on 40, then helped add seven more with Amita Sharma at the other end, until India completed their quota of overs.
Although the visitors lost their top order early and were left reeling on 43 for three, Shashikala Siriwardena anchored the innings to bring them within reach of the target. Soniya Dabir removed the Sri Lankan openers, while Rajeshwari Gayakwad claimed Chamari Athapaththu. With the visitors on 80, she also accounted for Ranasinghe. And 14 runs later, Ekta Bisht trapped Sripali Weerakkody lbw, and then castled Eshani Lokusooriya in the same over.
However, Siriwardena and Chamari Polgampala continued to rally on took their team to 139, until the former was caught by Gayakwad off her own bowling. With 14 balls left, Polgampala took her team across the line in the company of Anushka Sanjeewani.
