Sri Lanka claimed a berth in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2013 with a comprehensive 138-run victory over India at the Brabourne Stadium on Tuesday. Outplayed by the Shashikala Siriwardene-led team, India’s first ever loss to Sri Lanka in the ODIs has marked the end of their World Cup campaign. The Mithali Raj-led side will now take on Pakistan for the seventh place play-off in Cuttack on February 7.
After the Sri Lankan batters set up the game by piling on a mammoth total, their bowlers dealt early blows to knock India on the back foot from which the hosts couldn’t recover and folded for 144 runs.
Needing 283 runs to win and 251 to qualify for the Super Six stage, India faced an uphill task when they took on the Sri Lankan bowling attack. And with the top three back in the pavilion with just 38 runs on the board the hosts had a stiff challenge on their hands.
Eshani Kaushalya returned to strike with the ball early in the Indian innings after contributing a quick fire 56 off 31 with the bat. The pacer trapped Poonam Raut leg-before and 31 runs later Udeshika Prabodhani dismissed the Indian captain, Mitali Raj. Chamani Seneviratna followed up with the wicket of Harmanpreet Kaur.

M Thirush Kamini was the next to walk back to the dressing room after edging Sripali Weerakkody to the wicketkeeper to leave India reeling at 50 for four. And after Karuna Jain soon followed her back, Reema Malhotra and Jhulan Goswami rallied to put together 37 runs. But Goswami hit Sandamali Dolawatte straight to mid-wicket to depart for 22 and an over later Amita Sharma who had replaced her in the middle was castled by the SL skipper to leave India floundering on 117 for seven.
Reema Malhotra who had held up one end in an effort to extend the Indian innings was run out for 38 and was soon followed back by Ekta Bisht and Shubhlakshmi Sharma.
Earlier, after Shashikala Siriwardene elected to bat, Sri Lankan opener Chamari Atapattu edged Jhulan Goswami to first slip to depart in the first over with just four runs on the board. But the next four batters posted half-centuries to set India a formidable target.
India failed to create further dents in the SL line-up after the early breakthrough as Yasoda Mendis and Deepika Rasangika kept the scoreboard ticking and milked the bowlers to build a solid platform with a 117 partnership. The duo reached their fifties in the same over with singles off Reema Malhotra. But in the following over, Mendis’ mistimed shot off Amita Sharma sent the ball high in the air and was caught safely by Gouher Sultana to end the opener’s stay in the middle for 55.
However, Siriwardene continued to build on the platform with Rasangika and the duo added 67 runs for the third wicket before the latter departed 84. Rasangika’s well paced 109-ball innings consisted of 11 boundaries; her mishit off Goswami was caught by the Indian captain in the extra cover region. Kaushalya then joined the Sri Lankan captain in the middle, and scoring at a quick pace the duo added 58 off 43 balls until a direct him from Reema Malhotra from mid-off found the Siriwardene short of her crease at the non-striker’s end while trying to sneak in a cheeky single. And ten runs later Goswami uprooted Weerakkody’s off-stump in the penultimate over of the match with Sri Lanka on 256. But Kaushalya continued to go after the Indian bowling and struck the pacer for over the fence and hit Sultana for two boundaries and a six in the next to help collect 17 from the last over to take Sri Lanka to 282.
Brief scores: Sri Lanka 282/5 in 50 overs (D Rasangika 84, S Siriwardene 59, E Kaushalya 56*, J Goswami 3/63) beat India 144 all out in 42.2 overs (R Malhotra 38, S Siriwardene 2/20, C Seneviratna 2/10 ) by 138 runs
Player of the Match: HMD Rasangika for her 84-run knock
