Australia reached 354 for six in their first innings at stumps on the opening day of the first cricket Test against India here today. David Warner paid tribute to Phillip Hughes after compiling a swashbuckling century. The Indian bowlers had a perfect day on the field on the first day of the second warm-up match at the Gliderol Oval in Adelaide, against Cricket Australia XI. After the bowlers dismissed the hosts for 243 in 68.3 overs, the batsmen played off 29 overs on a day that comprised 100 instead of 90 overs. At stumps, Murali Vijay (39*)and Virat Kohli (30*) held fort for the Indians. Shikhar Dhawan departed for a golden duck, in the second over of the innings, lobbing a leg-side half volley to the man at forward square leg, off Josh Lalor. Cheteshwar Pujara looked compact in the middle for a while but soon he nicked one to slip where Ashton Turner clinched a stunner. India’s first warm-up match, against Cricket Australia XI, at the Gliderol Stadium in Adelaide ended in a draw with the visitors leading by 144 runs. Virat Kohli’s 60 off 114 was the top individual score for the Indians before lobbing a catch at mid-wicket. The Indians began the day at 55 for 1 with Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara at the crease. Both batsmen opted to retire from their innings after getting to their respective fifties. The Sri Lankans suffered a heavy thrashing in the hands of India A in their warm-up match at the Brabourne Stadium as they went down by 88 runs. Chasing India A’s 381, built on the back of centuries from Rohit Sharma and Manish Pandey, the Lankans finished with 294 for 9 in their 50 overs. The Sri Lankan innings never really took off. After Dhawal Kulkarni got rid of Kusal Perera in the ninth over, the visitors lost wickets at regular intervals. Karn Sharma was the wrecker-in-chief of the Lankan innings, as he removed four of the best opposition batsmen in Upul Tharanga (76), Tillakaratne Dishan (14), Mahela Jayawardena (33) and Angelo Mathews (3). While Unmukt Chand and Karun Nair were the players who caught Tharanga and Mathews respectively, Dilshan was trapped lbw and Jayawardene was castled. The Indians defeated Middlesex by 95 runs in the one-day warm-up match at the Lord’s. Virat Kohli (71) and Ambati Rayudu (72) were mainly responsible for India’s score of 230 all-out after they were inserted in to bat by Middlesex. India’s bowling performance was a true team show as every bowler barring part-time slow bowler, Ravindra Jadeja, picked up at least a wicket. Karn Sharma cleaned up the tail to finish with 3 for 14 in 4.5 overs. Defending a modest 230, the Indians got off to a good start, dismissing both Middlesex openers in the first three overs. It was Bhuvneshwar Kumar who drew first blood, getting Nick Gubbins to edge one to the keeper in the third over.
