Prof D B Deodhar Trophy Final: West Zone beat North Zone

Ambati Rayudu guided West Zone to a five-wicket win over North Zone with a 78 not-out in the Prof D B Deodhar Trophy final at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati. After captain Parthiv Patel and Manprit Juneja struck half-centuries to lay the platform for their team, Rayudu took his side across the line and was brilliantly supported by Kedar Jadhav’s quick-fire fifty. While chasing the 290-run target, West Zone lost opener Vijay Zol with just 24 runs on the board. Although skipper Parthiv Patel and Manprit Juneja stitched together a decent stand, their partnership was halted for 87 by Amit Mishra. The senior leg-spinner claimed the key wicket of Patel who had cruised to his 58 at a quick pace. And 46 runs later, Juneja offered a return catch to Manpreet Gony to walk back for 56. Yusuf Pathan continued his fine run in limited overs format as his smashing half-century helped West Zone crush South by five wickets as they entered the final of the Deodhar Trophy. West will now take on North Zone in tomorrow's summit clash. Put into bat, South made a decent 258 for five in their stipulated 50 overs riding on half-centuries from Stuart Binny (65) and Sachin Baby (58). In reply, West knocked off the runs in 41.1 overs courtesy Yusuf's 53-ball-68. The India discard hit eight boundaries and two mighty sixes -- one each of offie Baba Aparajith and left-arm spinner B Sudhakar. This is his third consecutive 60-plus score having scored a century and a half century in the successive matches in Vijay Hazare one day meet. Deodhar Trophy: Yuvraj, Unmukt Helps North Zone to Enter Final

Half-centuries by senior pro Yuvraj Singh and the talented Unmukt Chand helped North Zone cruise to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over Central Zone in Guwahati on Monday to enter the Deodhar Trophy final. North will meet the winner of the second semi-final between South Zone and West Zone scheduled to be played on Tuesday. North Zone captain Gautam Gambhir opted to field and his bowlers responded well by bundling out Central for a paltry 190 in 41.5 overs in match that was first curtailed to 45-overs-per side. Due to inclement weather, North's target was revised to 160 in 33 overs and the winners got their with 19 balls to spare. The highlight of the North chase was a partnership of 129 runs between Yuvraj (77) and Unmukt (56). Young Baba Aparajith scored his maiden century in limited overs cricket as South Zone beat East by 11 runs in the Deodhar Trophy quarter-final in Guwahati on Sunday. South will now take on West Zone in the second semi-final slated for Tuesday. Opting to bat the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati, South Zone posted a healthy total of 284 for five in 50 overs riding on Aparajith's 121. The India colts player played 129 balls and hit 10 fours and three sixes in his innings. In reply, East managed to 273 for seven with skipper Wriddhiman Saha top-scoring with 77 and Ishank Jaggi managing to hit 55. It was the 89 runs given by the East Zone bowlers in the final 10 overs of the South innings that turned out to be decisive. Gujarat's Parthiv Patel will lead West Zone in the DB Deodhar Trophy one-day limited overs inter zonal knock-out cricket tournament to be played from March 16 to 19 at Mohali and Dharamsala.  Mumbai's Ajinkya Rahane would be his deputy, said zonal selection panel convener Nitin Dalal on Tuesday.  West would clash with East in the semifinal on March 17 at Mohali, the day after South and Central take on each other in the lone quarterfinal at the same venue.  The other semifinal, between North and the winners of the quarterfinal between South and Central, is to be held at Dharamsala which will also host the final on March 19.  West Zone squad:  Parthiv Patel (Capt), Sheldon Jackson, Ambati Rayudu, Siddesh Lad, Kedar Jadhav, Yusuf Pathan, Abhishek Nayar, Munaf Patel, Jaydev Unadkat, Rush Kalaria, Rakesh Dhruv, Kamlesh Makwana, Manpreet Juneja, Akshay Darekar, Vijay Zol.

Bengal's Wriddhiman Saha will lead a 15– member East Zone squad for their quarter-final match against South Zone in the Deodhar Trophy on March 10 at Nehru Stadium in Guwahati. The side will reach Guwahati on March 7. S Saikia from Assam will be the coach of the team.
