Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the Boxing Day Test due to injury and will be replaced in Australia's 13-man squad with Queenslander Joe Burns.

Burns, who produced the third highest score on debut by a Queenslander when he scored 140 against South Australia in 2010-11, hit his highest first class score last month when he made 183 against New South Wales.

The right-handed top order batsman has scored nearly 3000 first class runs at an average of 42.

David Warner retains his place in the Australian side despite concerns over an injury to his thumb.

"It's just bruised, so hopefully it pulls up alright," Australian coach Darren Lehmann said of Warner's knock.

Ryan Harris is expected to return to the starting XI in place of Mitchell Starc, who struggled to make an impact in Brisbane, while Josh Hazlewood's fine debut performance should ensure he retains his spot.

Lehmann said Shane Watson's form with the ball played a part in the decision to include Burns.

"Joe Burns can bat anywhere from one to six, we've got some flexibility there," he said.

"Watson was one of our best bowlers at the Gabba.

"That made it easier to replace Marsh with a batsman and not an allrounder.

"Mitchell Marsh will travel with the team to prepare for the Sydney Test.

"It is only a squad for one Test match."

Australia's squad for the third Test: David Warner, Chris Rogers, Shane Watson, Steve Smith (capt), Shaun Marsh, Joe Burns, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle.
