Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Faisalabad Wolves: Q4 - Match Report

Shikhar-Dhawan-Sunrisers-Hyderabad-vs-Faisalabad-Wolves-CLT20-2013

The Sunrisers Hyderabad confirmed their progression to the main draw of the Karbonn Smart CLT20 2013 after they registered their second win in the Qualifiers. This victory ensures the Sunrisers a top-two finish in the Qualifiers. After restricting the Faisalabad Wolves to a modest 127, the Sunrisers had little difficulty in the run-chase; the IPL franchise got past the finish line in the 18th over and registered a convincing seven-wicket victory.

Despite being faced with a modest asking rate of 6.40, the Sunrisers opening pair of Parthiv Patel and Shikhar Dhawan came out with an aggressive attitude. Both batsmen picked up boundaries regularly, and the team raced to 51 at the end of six overs.

Both batsmen were having little difficulty in the middle and looked good for the long haul. But Patel’s stay in the middle came to an end when he pulled Ehsan Adil to short midwicket. He made 23 from 21 and was associated in a 68-run stand with his skipper.

Dhawan, however, brought up his half-century in style when he advanced down the track and hit left-arm spinner, Imran Khalid, for a boundary through midwicket. He deposited the following delivery into the stands beyond the midwicket fence. But the bowler had the final say as he forced the Dhawan to drag one back onto his stumps. The Sunrisers skipper made 59 from 50 balls in an innings that was studded with six boundaries and a six.

Though the Sunrisers lost Biplab Samantray shortly after, JP Duminy (20) and Darren Sammy (14) ensured there were no further casualties and took their team past the finish line. For the Wolves, Ehsan Adil (1/14) and Imran Khalid (2/14) were the wicket-takers.

Earlier in the evening, after being put in to bat, the Wolves got off to a sound start with openers Ammar Mahmood (31) and Ali Waqas (16) adding 48 runs. But once Amit Mishra had Waqas caught at midwicket, it was an all too familiar story thereafter – of wickets falling at one end and Misbah-ul-Haq holding firm at the other.

The Wolves skipper had no trouble in answering all that was dished out by the Sunrisers bowlers. The 39-year-old hit five sixes and a boundary during his 40-ball 56. He brought up his half-century in style when he deposited a low full toss from Thisara Perera beyond the fence at fine-leg. Misbah was chiefly responsible in helping his team to a respectable total of 127/5. That the next best strike-rate in the Wolves batting line-up was Ammar Mahmood’s 81.57 – as against Misbah’s 140 – illustrates how the Wolves skipper was on a different plane altogether.

For the Sunrisers, Dale Steyn was back to doing what he does best – bowling quick and swinging the ball late. Ishant Sharma too bowled disciplined lines and lengths and caused a lot of trouble. Shikhar Dhawan, who utilized just the one over of spin in the previous match, got Amit Mishra to bowl his full quota of overs in this match. And the leg-spinner responded well; apart from giving his team the initial breakthrough, he bowled 17 dot balls in his four-over spell and gave away only 13 runs. Karan Sharma was impressive at the other end, bowling his quick leg-breaks; he accounted for the wicket of Asif Ali. The rest of the wickets were shared between Ishant, Thisara Perera and Darren Sammy.

Trivia: In the five overs that Sunrisers Hyderabad's Amit Mishra and Karan Sharma bowled in tandem, they conceded 18 runs and picked up two wickets.

Scorecard

Man of the Match: Amit Mishra for his economical spell of 4-1-13-1.

Dhawan: "We [Misbah] are both in good form so it really helps our sides. Dale Steyn came back into form nicely and our spinners bowled great too, it's all going good."

Misbah: "My performance is good, but the team at the moment is not getting it done. It's great experience for some of our younger guys and what sort of pressures they will face on the international stage. We need to win our last match to go home on a positive."
