We needed to build partnerships: Manoj Tiwary

Manoj-Tiwary-RR-vs-KKR-IPL-2013

Kolkata Knight Riders lost to the Rajasthan Royals in an exciting game of cricket. With the kind of batting line-up the defending champions have, it was a game that few would have thought KKR would lose after restricting the home team to 144 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

However, a sudden middle-order collapse after milking the first over for 14 runs changed the tone of the game as the match slipped away from the Gautam Gambhir-led side.

Left floundering on 20 for two, Manoj Tiwary and Gautam Gambhir added 20 runs before both departed in the seventh over. And although Eoin Morgan held up one end and capitalised on the life he had got early on, he kept losing partners at the other end and was unable to revive the innings.

While speaking to iplt20.com, Tiwary analysed the defeat and said that lack of partnerships cost them match and the team would regroup and iron out the crease going ahead in the tournament.

Excerpts from the brief interview:

While chasing you wouldn’t have anticipated such a tight finish?

We didn’t think we will lose the match the way we started but that’s the beauty of T20 game. We all know that sudden fall of wickets can change the course of the match and eventually that is what happened. We lost quick wickets in the third over and it (the match) went to them.

Would you say that you had restricted them well?

Yes. We kept them to 144 on a wicket that was playing good, so we just needed to build partnerships which we didn’t do in the second half. I think that if there were some partnership then we would have been able to win the match.

Eoin Morgan brought the game very close. What according to you was the turning point of the game?

Couple of wickets falling (early on) and wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Most of (us) batsmen, we have to sit down and think about the shot selection. Because more than they taking wickets we have given away the wickets by playing bad shots. I think we have to learn from these mistakes and move on from here. There is a long way to go now, there are another 14 matches [to be played still. I think we can do much better.

Are you feeling in good nick?

Yes, I am feeling in good nick but I need to continue more with my batting. Because I am just coming off an injury and am getting the feel of the match in the centre and I am confident that I will do well.
