Kerala registered a thumping six-wicket win over hosts Goa to enter the knockout stage of the Vijay Hazare Trophy inter-state one-day cricket championship as South Zone runners-up on Wednesday.

This is the first time since the tournament’s inception that a Kerala team has qualified for the knockout phase.

In the last round match played at Porvorim, Goa, after electing to bat first, found themselves cornered from the very start as they lost four early wickets.

Medium pacer Sandeep Warrier claimed the first scalp of the Goan team as Asnodkar was caught behind by wicketkeeper Sanju Viswanath when the score was just 23.

Goan skipper Sagun Kamat (71) stood firm amid the ruins but he was caught by Prasanth off Jagadeesh’s bowling to leave Goa precariously placed at 161 for 7.

However, his replace ment Robin D’Souz rose to the occasion with a handy knock of 50 to take Goa past the 200-run mark, to 219.

For Kerala, P.Parameswaran shone by taking three wickets for 34 runs and was ably supported P. Prasanth (2/26).

Though Kerala lost their openers early, in-form batsmen Rohan Prem and Sanju Viswanath ensured victory with their finely tuned innings. In the thirdwicket stand of 99 runs, Sanju (58) played aggressively while Rohan gave a strong support with an unbeaten 82.

Sanju’s innings was studded with four boundaries and three sixes. He was out after taking Kerala within striking distance, at 170.

Kerala, which finished the group stage with 17 points, will face Punjab on February 26 in the quarterfinal match.

Brief Scores: Goa 219 in 49.5 overs (Sagun Kamat 71, Robin 50, P. Parameswaran 3/34, P. Prasanth 2/26) lost to Kerala 223 for 4 in 45.3 overs (Sanju 58, Rohan Prem 82 not out).
