Stuart Binny became 281st player to represent India in Test cricket. Stuart’s father Roger represented India in 27 Tests between 1979 and 1987. Stuart thus provided the tenth instance of a son following foot-steps of his father in playing in a Test for India. Other father-son combinations to represent India in Test cricket are:

Iftikhar Ali Khan and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi

Vinoo and Ashok Mankad

Lala Amarnath and Mohinder Amarnath

Lala Amarnath and Surinder Amarnath

Dattu and Anshuman Gaekwad

Pankaj and Pranab Roy

Vijay and Sanjay Manjrekar

Hemant and Hrishikesh Kanitkar

Yograj and Yuvraj Singh

India went in to the Test with only five specialist batsmen. The last time this happened in a Test outside the subcontinent was in 2007-08 against Australia at Adelaide. That match ended in a draw.

James Anderson’s wicket of Shikhar Dhawan was his 50th at Trent Bridge. He became first bowler to take 50 wickets at this ground.

Anderson has now taken 357 wickets in Test cricket, which takes him ahead of Dennis Lillee and Chaminda Vaas in all-time leading wicket-takers’ list. Anderson is now 19th in this list.

India were 106 for one at lunch. The last time India started an overseas series on a better note was against Bangladesh in 2007 when India were 113/1 at lunch at Chittagong.

Murali Vijay (122*) made his highest score in a Test outside India. This is also his first hundred in an away Test. His previous highest was 97 against South Africa at Durban in December 2013.

Vijay’s innings is the fifth highest by any Indian on the opening day of a Test in England. The details:
