Report: Bangladesh vs India, 2nd ODI – Sahara Cup 2014

Stuart-Binny-6-Wickets-vs-Bangladesh

In a thrilling encounter, India won the rain reduced, low scoring second ODI by 47 runs (D/L method) to seal the three-match ODI series. Stuart Binny was the show stopper as he claimed six for four runs in 4.4 overs to defend 105 runs at the Shere Bangla Stadium and take an unassailable 2-0 lead against Bangladesh. (Useful Link: Stats: Bangladesh vs India, 2nd ODI – Sahara Cup 2014)

The day belonged to pacers as Bangladesh first bundled India out for 105, while the Indian attack, spearheaded by Mohit Sharma and superbly complemented by Binny, bowled the hosts out in 17.4 overs claim victory.

Bowling a disciplined line and utilizing the conditions to his advantage, Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed finished with a five-wicket haul on debut. The rest of the attack too, responding to the Bangladesh captain’s decision to field, didn’t allow the Indian batsmen to break the shackles after reducing the opposition to 28 for three and then bowling them out for their lowest total against Bangladesh.

However, the Indian bowling attack fought back. Sharma picked two early wickets to leave the home team 13 for two while Binny sent back Mushfiqur Rahim ending the 37-run third wicket stand and claimed two more to keep his team in the fray. Re-introduced into the attack, Sharma followed up with two more to tip the balance in India’s favour. It was all downhill for the home team who could not revive their side after conceding the advantage to the visitors.

Tamim Iqbal was caught by the wicketkeeper while attempting a big hit. In the pacer’s next over, Anamul Haque hit Sharma to Rahane at backward point to leave the home team on 13 for two.

Mithun Ali and Mushfiqur, however, worked to ensure that Bangladesh didn't go the India way after play resumed. But with the team on 44, Mushfiqur departed handing a catch to Saha off a Binny delivery going down the leg side. With a maiden and a wicket maiden Binny had plugged the flow of runs. In his third over the all-rounder removed Mithun Ali and Mahmudullah off successive deliveries to leave the hosts on 50 for five. Binny had claimed three without conceding a run to keep his team in the reckoning. While Ali hit the ball to square-leg, Mahmudullah offered the catch to Ambati Rayudu at gully.

Earlier, Mortaza removed Ajinkya Rahane off the second ball of the day. He was trapped leg-before with a delivery that came in. Able to extract movement off the pitch, the Bangladesh bowlers were in command as they kept Robin Uthappa and Cheteshwar Pujara on their toes. With the batsmen unable to rotate the strike, runs were hard to come by for India. The hosts had held India to 14 for the loss of one wicket in 5.2 overs until rain made an appearance forcing the players off the field. Until then, Mortaza and Hossain had both bowled a maiden each in the first five overs while Taskin looked promising in his first two deliveries.

When rain finally stopped the match was reduced to 41 overs-a-side and Taskin returned to fulfill the promise he had given a glimpse off in his first two balls. In his second over, the young fast bowler accounted for the key wicket of Uthappa. The opener departed top-edging a quicker delivery from the debutant to mid-off.

The Bangladesh bowlers hit the deck hard and continued to ask questions off the Indian batsmen. In his next over, Taskin provided his team with yet another crucial breakthrough by claiming Ambati Rayudu lbw and leaving the visitors on 28 for three. He had Pujara lbw a bit later.

Mortaza then followed up with the wicket of Wriddhiman Saha; leg-before off an inswinging Yorker. With five wickets gone and only 65 runs on board, Stuart Binny who had replaced Parvez Rasool in the side took strike opposite Suresh Raina. However, India’s woes continued as their captain was run out while scampering for a second.

With two wickets off two balls, young Akshar Patel made his way to the middle and got his first international runs with a boundary over mid-on off Al Amin-Hossain but didn’t last long. Later in the over, after yet another boundary, he was castled by the bowler.

Reintroduced into the attack from the other end after a brief respite, Taskin had Binny nick to the keeper to claim his fourth wicket and in his next had yet another Indian batsman lbw to finish his five-for. With Amit Mishra back in the pavilion, India’s No 11 bat, Umesh Yadav took guard in just the 23rd over. And after helping add 19 runs to the total, the tail-ender was sent back by Shakib Al Hasan.

Man of the Match: Stuart Binny for figures of 4.4-2-4-6, India’s best ODI figures

  • Raina: "I think we needed to score 180 plus, but the way they bowled, especially Stuart Binny and Mohit Sharma, was unbelievable. This performance will definitely help Binny when he plays Test cricket in England. I knew I had to keep faith in the bowlers as the pitch was doing a lot".

  • Rahim: "We had dismissed the opposition for just more than 100 and we could have taken whatever time to chase it. I think our batsmen didn't take responsibility upfront and played some careless shots. I think we embarrassed our country in front of the whole world. The only positive was Taskin and Mashrafe as they bowled really well".
