Kane Williamson (71) became the sixth New Zealand batsman to score a 50 in his 50th match, after Geoff Howarth, Bruce Edgar, Chris Cairns, Bryan Young and Hamish Marshall.
Ross Taylor (55), while on 15, completed his 4000 ODI runs. He became the ninth New Zealand batsman to do so. Only Nathan Astle (120) has taken fewer innings than Taylor (121) to reach this milestone.
MS Dhoni’s catch of Ross Taylor earned him his 300th dismissal in ODIs. He became the first Indian and only the fourth wicketkeeper in ODIs to accomplish this feat, after Adam Gilchrist (472), Mark Boucher (424) and Kumar Sangakkara (424).
Mohammed Shami (4/55) returned his best ODI figures, bettering his 3/42 against Australia at Ranchi last year.
Mohammed Shami became the fifth Indian bowler to take four wickets in his first appearance against New Zealand, after Roger Binny (4/41, Perth, 1980), Narendra Hirwani (4/43, Sharjah, 1988), Krish Srikkanth (5/27, Visakhapatnam, 1988) and Ajit Agarkar (4/35, Sharjah, 1998).
Shami’s figures are the best by an Indian bowler bowling for the first time against New Zealand in New Zealand, obliterating Ajit Agarkar’s 3/26 at Christchurch in 2003.
New Zealand’s total of 292 for seven is the highest in New Zealand-India contests at Napier. India had made 273 for four in 2009. New Zealand’s previous highest here against India was 254 for nine in 2002.

Kohli became the second Indian to score a 100 in his very first innings against New Zealand in New Zealand. The only other Indian to do so is Rahul Dravid (123* at Taupo in 1999).
Kohli’s 12 tons are now the second-most by any batsman in run chases, after Sachin Tendulkar’s 17. Interestingly, Kohli took 69 innings for his 12 hundreds (at an average of 5.75 innings per ton), whereas Sachin’s 17 hundreds came in 232 innings (at an average of 13.65 innings per ton).
Kohli’s innings is the second highest by an Indian batsman in a chase on New Zealand soil, after Virender Sehwag’s 125 at Hamilton in 2009.
Incidentally, it was the first time that Kohli ended on the losing side after scoring a 100 in a chase. India had won on all 11 previous occasions!
Mitchell McClenaghan (4/68) took his sixth four-wicket haul in ODIs. Interestingly, McClenaghan has now taken a four-wicket haul bowling for the first time against SIX opponents out of the seven he has played ODIs against. He took 4/20 against South Africa at Paarl on 19-01-2013, 4/56 against England at Hamilton on 17-02-2013, 4/43 against Sri Lanka at Cardiff on 09-06-2013, 4/65 against Australia at Birmingham on 12-06-2013 and a career best 5/58 against West Indies at Auckland on 26-12-2013. The only team against which McClenaghan failed to pick up a four-wicket haul in his first appearance is Bangladesh.
McClenaghan’s feat of taking a four-wicket haul against six opponents on his first appearance stands out in ODIs. Australia’s Mitchell Starc is the closest to his record, with four-wicket hauls on his first appearance against four opponents.
McClenaghan’s tally of 47 wickets is the second highest by any bowler in ODI history after his first 19 matches. Only Ajantha Mendis (51) managed more wickets in his first 19 games.
