Brisbane Heat vs Trinidad & Tobago, M2 - Report: CLT20-2013

Trinidad & Tobago opened their account in the Karbonn Smart CLT20 2013 with a 25-run win over Brisbane Heat at the JSCA International Cricket Stadium in Ranchi. After being asked to bat first on a bowler-friendly track, T&T posted a modest 135, but came out all charged up and skittled out their opponents for 110. A lot of the credit for T&T’s outstanding showing should go to their captain Denesh Ramdin. After playing a lone hand to guide his team to a respectable total, he marshaled his resources brilliantly, never once allowing Brisbane Heat to take control of what should have been a rather simple chase. Ravi Rampaul gave his team an early breakthrough when he nailed James Hopes in the third over. Samuel Badree, who opened the bowling at the other end, tightened the noose around the Brisbane Heat batsmen right from the word go; the leg-spinner conceded only 16 runs in his four-over spell. Faced with an asking rate of 7.00, Badree’s miserly spell left Brisbane Heat needing to score at close to nine runs an over in the final 12 overs.

The Brisbane Heat batsmen made merry briefly when Sherwin Ganga and Lendl Simmons were pressed into the attack, scoring 28 runs of the three overs bowled by them. However, the T&T bowlers made continuous inroads. The introduction of Sunil Narine into the attack made things more difficult for the Heat. The Mystery bowler was taken for 12 runs in his second over, but came back strongly to pick up two wickets in his following over.

Opener Joe Burns looked good and resisted the T&T bowlers until the 16th over, before he was bowled by Rampaul; he made 45 from 43 balls. His dismissal all but pulled the curtains on the Brisbane Heat run-chase. The team was bowled out in 18.4 overs, with 110 runs on the board.
For T&T, the eight overs bowled by Badree & Narine fetched three wickets and cost the team 41 runs, while the 7.4 overs bowled by Rampaul and Emrit fetched the them six wickets for 40 runs.

Earlier in the evening, the T&T innings got off to a brisk start with Evin Lewis and Lendl Simmons picking up boundaries. After hitting Alister McDermott for three successive boundaries, Lendl’s attempt to get a fourth boundary resulted in him dragging the ball onto his stumps. Lewis became McDermott’s second victim when he miscued one and was caught at square-leg.

Ramdin then got off the mark in a streaky manner, inside edging one from Kemar Roach to the fine-leg boundary. The following delivery raced to the thirdman boundary, this time from the middle of the bat. Hauritz was then deposited into the stands in the long-on region.

At the half-way mark, T&T were well placed at 71/3 when Hauritz’s double blow derailed the innings. He picked up Jason Mohammed and Sherwin Ganga off consecutive deliveries. T&T were also hurt by the fact that Ramdin got very little strike in the next few overs. However, when he got it, he made it count; he hit Ben Cutting for a boundary and six in the 15th over and hit Roach for a boundary through covers in the 17th over. The T&T captain perished in the 19th over when he miscued a shot to be caught at sweeper-cover; he was dismissed for 48.

Samuel Badree hit McDermott for two sixes to ensure his team had a reasonable score to defend. T&T finished their 20 overs at 135/9.
The Brisbane Heat bowlers – especially the quicks – did well to utilize the pace and bounce the surface offered. McDermott finished the most successful bowler picking up four wickets – his best effort in T20 cricket – while Nathan Hauritz impressed, finishing with figures of 2/22.
Trivia: The 38 short deliveries in the T&T innings cost Brisbane Heat 56 runs. There were 23 short deliveries in the BH innings which cost T&T only 17 runs.

Brisbane Heat managed to score two boundaries in their powerplay overs. The first six overs of the BH innings had as many as 22 dot balls.

Man of the Match: Denesh Ramdin for his 38-ball 48

Denesh Ramdin, T&T captain and Man of the Match: "It was good victory, we were 10-15 runs short but Badree and Rampaul setup the win by bowling well in the first six overs. I told the guys if we get early wickets and they don't cross 35 in six overs, we have a good chance. We didn't have the partnerships going and we have to go from strength to strength. I tried my best [while batting] and the ball was doing a bit early, we will see if I need to go up the order."

James Hopes: "We bowled and fieleded pretty well. The pitch got a bit quicker later and tougher to score on, we have three games to go and have a bit of work to do before Tueday night. We restricted them to a score that was definitely chaseable but we didn't bat well."

Ravi Rampaul: "I'm very happy with my performance as it's my first competitive match after my injury. I think the batsmen misinterpret my run-up and don't think I will bowl very fast. T&T is a strong team, a couple of years age we made around 100 and won on the last ball against Mumbai. The credit must go to the captain for the way he batted and handled the bowlers."
