After India Under-19 declared their innings on 393 for eight in the last session the Sri Lanka Under 19 were 11 without loss when stumps were called. The home team were trailing by 170 runs with all wickets intact at the end of second day’s play of the ongoing four-day encounter in the island nation.
After India had lost both their openers early in the innings on the first day, Vijay Zol and Sanju Samson built a 160-run partnership for the third wicket to take the visitors past SL U19’s first innings total and ensure a platform for a lead. Lakshan Jayasinghe broke the stand by dismissing Samson for 70. With the score on 219 for three, Shreyas Iyer then joined his captain to build on the lead. Zol carried on his sublime form and scored a patient century – 128 off 204 – before being sent back by Binura Fernando.
The Indian colts lost wicketkeeper Ankush Bains a bit later but Iyer and Aamir Gani added 98 runs until Priyamal Perera struck to end the partnership. Iyer who had made a valuable 84, edged the ball to the keeper and had to walk back. The bowler then trapped Kuldeep Yadav lbw off the next ball but was denied a hat-trick. And later in the same over Gani was run out for 41.
With three wickets falling in the 100th over at 392 for eight, lower-order batsmen Atul Singh and Chama Milind came in to bat but were yet to open their accounts when the visitors deiced to declare their innings and inserted Sri Lanka U19 to bat at the fag end of the second day. With 393 for eight the Zol-led side had a sizeable lead as they took the field in the last session.
Openers Hashan Dumindu and Minod Bhanuka then saw SL through six overs and putting up 11 runs before calling it a day.
