While Pune Warriors India’s eight-wicket home loss on Sunday could be attributed to a track that tended to skid early on, their star all-rounder, Marlon Samuels, stressed that it was their inability to give the bowling unit a defendable score to work with that led to their downfall. Samuels, who just like most of PWI batters, failed to come to terms with the Kings XI Punjab bowlers, also said that his team’s back-to-back losses in the early stages of the tournament should serve as a wake-up call.
However, Samuels also expressed faith in his team and the support staff and their ability to bounce back in IPL 2013.
Here are the excerpts from his chat with iplt20.com:
It must be disappointing to lose the first two games, but still there’s a long way to go in the tournament to make a comeback?
Yeah, most definitely. We should have got home in the first game (against Sunrisers Hyderabad) where we were chasing a low total. But nevertheless, we came here again, and 99 wasn’t good enough to defend on this pitch. 130-odd would’ve given us a very good chance here.
What do you reckon was the reason behind the low total today?
The pitch earlier played a role. It was skidding and we didn’t negotiate the pitch as fast as possible to pick up a few more singles. But nevertheless, it’s still early in the tournament and the Pune Warriors India can come back.
The support staff is behind the team and they’re doing a wonderful job. And as the support continues, we’ll continue to play hard and good cricket.
Speaking of your support staff, your head coach is Allan Donald – a bowling legend. What’s it like playing under someone like him?
It’s definitely very motivating to have him as a coach. As you said, he’s a legend; a wonderful person too. I’m glad to be here and enjoy this wonderful atmosphere, and I am enjoying the legend as well. He has been very supportive throughout the tournament so far.
And what is that one area in which PWI needs to improve as the tournament moves forward?
We definitely need to put more runs on the board. I think we have the bowling that can defend a good total. So, once we put runs on the board, we’ll do better.
It is still very early in the tournament. I think these two games are basically a wake-up call. I guess we should wake up now and start playing some hard cricket.
