Irani Cup 2012-13: Statistical and Records
Ranji Trophy winners Mumbai will take on Rest Of India in the Irani Cup starting tomorrow at the Wankhede Stadium.
This season marks the first time that this prestigious cup will be contested over twice in a matter of five months – ROI played last year’s Ranji champions, Rajasthan, in the early part of the 2012-13 season. The reason why this game has been held twice this season is because of the order of domestic events being shuffled recently.
This season marks the first time that this prestigious cup will be contested over twice in a matter of five months – ROI played last year’s Ranji champions, Rajasthan, in the early part of the 2012-13 season. The reason why this game has been held twice this season is because of the order of domestic events being shuffled recently.
This year, Ranji powerhouse, Mumbai will gun for their 15th Irani Cup – out of all the Ranji champs, they have won the coveted trophy the most number of times. Here are these and many more interesting statistics pertaining to the Irani Cup:
- This is the 51st edition of the Irani Cup (52nd scheduled edition if we take in account the 1979-80 game between Rest of India and Delhi at Jalandhar that was abandoned without the toss).
- Out of the previous 50 editions of Irani Cup, Rest Of India have won the trophy on 24 occasions, while Ranji champions have won on 25 times. The title was shared in 1965-66 as the first innings could not be completed.
- Among the Ranji champions, Bombay/Mumbai have won the title on most occasions (14), followed by Karnataka (4), Delhi and Railways (2 each). Hyderabad, Tamil Nadu and Haryana (once each) are the other teams to have laid their hands on the trophy.
- This is the first time that the Irani Cup is being held twice in the same season. In September last year 2011-12 Ranji winners Rajasthan took on Rest Of India at Bangalore. ROI won the match by an innings and 79 runs back then. Within five months another edition of Irani Cup is being held. This is because recently the order of various domestic events was shuffled. Henceforth Irani Cup will be played at the end of the season and not at the beginning.
