In a one-sided contest the Sydney Sixers handed Yorkshire an eight-wicket drubbing in Match 6 of the Karbonn CLT20 2012. After surprisingly opting to bat first, Yorkshire struggled to cope with the Sydney Sixers’ pace battery and only managed 96 runs in their 20 overs. In reply, the Sixers scored the required runs in 8.5 overs to run away with four points from the match and give their net run-rate a major boost. 

Earlier in the afternoon, the Yorkshire innings got off to a sound start with openers Andrew Gale and Phil Jaques adding 30 runs in close to six overs. However, both batsmen would be dismissed in the space of three deliveries to let the Sixers back into the match.

A 32-run partnership – the biggest of the innings – between Joe Root and Adam Lyth once again swung the pendulum towards Yorkshire. But once Moises Henriques pegged back Joe Root’s off-stump in the 13th over, the Sixers found the opening they wanted. They would force their way back into the match, with pace and bounce, picking up six wickets in the remaining overs, and conceding only 34 runs in that period.

Though it was the left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe who opened the bowling for the Sixers, it would be the five pacers who would do all the damage. Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins were miserly with the ball; while the former finished with stunning figures of 4-0-9-1, the latter would return with figures of 2 for 13 from his four overs. The left-armer Mitchell Starc – who continues to impress – was the most successful bowler with three wickets. Henriques and Shane Watson were the other wicket-takers for the Sixers.

The run-chase was going to be rather routine, given they were chasing only 97. Though Shane Watson was dismissed in the second over after he had hit Root for a six and a boundary in the first over, Michael Lumb and Brad Haddin got stuck into the Yorkshire bowlers to finish the game in a hurry. Haddin hit six boundaries in the first ten balls he faced – all off the bowling of Ryan Sidebottom – while Lumb would hit Moin Ashraf for three consecutive boundaries in the fifth over. By the time the field restrictions were eased at the end of the sixth over, the Sixers had raced to 69.

Haddin perished in the ninth over when a neatly timed flick landed in the hands of the fielder at the square-leg boundary; he made 41 from 21 balls, in a knock that comprised eight boundaries. Lumb scored back-to-back boundaries later in the same over to seal the contest; he remained unbeaten on 43 (24 balls), while Dominic Thornely had one run against his name.

Brief Scores: Yorkshire 96 for 9 in 20 overs (Joe Root 25, Mitchell Starc 3-22, Pat Cummins 2-13, Shane Watson 2-27) lost to Sydney Sixers 98 for 2 in 8.5 overs (Michael Lumb 43*, Brad Haddin 41) by 8 wickets.

  • Haddin: "We had a few things we wanted to work on after our first game and we have done that today, we are improving with each match. All our bowlers contributed and they are young and keen to get the job done. It's important to get as much out of the first six overs as you can and we did that today."
  • Gale: "150 or 160 would have been a competitive score, but we were chasing the game after a poor start. I thought Sydney adapted to the pitch a lot quicker than us and their tall fast bowlers made it tough to score runs. We have three games left and hopefully we can learn from this and turn results round."
