CSK vs YOR - M17 - CLT20-2012

Chennai Super Kings vs Yorkshire Match 17 Report CLT20-2012:

The Chennai Super Kings finished their Karbonn CLT20 2012 campaign on a happy note after they beat Yorkshire by four wickets. After putting Yorkshire in to bat first, the IPL outfit restricted their opponents to 140 and then knocked off the required runs in 19 overs.

Though the Chennai Super Kings lost the wickets of Faf du Plessis and Murali Vijay early in the run-chase, they recovered through a 48-run partnership between S Badrinath and Suresh Raina. The pair accumulated runs with ones and twos, apart from hitting the odd boundary and helped the momentum swing back in their team’s favour. At 74 for two at the end of 11 overs, the Chennai Super Kings certainly held the edge and it was their game to lose.

However, against the run of play, Raina perished when he was beaten by a slower delivery from Oliver Hannon-Dalby and holed out to the man at deep cover; the left-hander hit only one boundary and one six in his 30-ball 31.

MS Dhoni, who handed the reins of the team to Raina for this particular match, walked out to bat at No.5. He and Badrinath added 43 runs over the next 5.1 overs to take their team to the brink. While both batsmen took every opportunity to turn the strike over, they also hit the occasional boundaries to keep the run-rate in check. Badrinath hit Hannon-Dalby for a boundary, while Dhoni chose to send Adil Rashid and Azeem Rafiq into the stands.

Badrinath, the innings top-scorer, perished when he attempted a cheeky paddle only to lose his stumps; he made 47 from 38 balls. Though CSK lost Ravindra Jadeja and Dhoni (31 off 23 balls) thereafter, the middle order had set up the win. Wriddhiman Saha, who kept wicket in this match, scored the winning run off the last ball of the 19th over, while Albie Morkel remained unbeaten on 4.

Iain Wardlaw, Steven Pattereson and Hannon-Dalby were the wicket-takers for Yorkshire, who were sloppy on the field and conceded several runs through overthrows.

Earlier in the afternoon, after being put in to bat first, Yorkshire got off to a quiet start scoring only four runs in two overs. However, the opening pair of Andrew Gale and Adam Lyth made up for their slow start when they scored 15 runs of Ravichandran Ashwin’s second over and followed it up with sixes in the next couple of overs. Gale, who hit Doug Bollinger and Ben Hilfenhaus for sixes through midwicket and point respectively, would perish in the sixth over, while Lyth top-edged a short delivery from Hilfenhaus to hole out at mid-off in the seventh over. And when Joe Root perished gloving a Morkel delivery down the leg-side caught by a diving Wriddhiman Saha, Yorkshire would slip to 43 for 3.

Gary Ballance and David Miller, who returned to the Yorkshire playing XI, then consolidated the innings with a mixture of sensible running and some powerful strikes. The pair – who ran as many as 27 singles and seven twos – also hit four sixes and two boundaries in their partnership. Miller, who hit one boundary and a six in his 26-ball 28, perished when he threw his bat at a wide delivery from Bollinger but found the man at cover. Ballance, who hit MS Dhoni and Hilfenhaus for two sixes each, perished in the final over when he attempted to sneak a run off a wide delivery but was caught short of his ground by a direct hit from wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha; he made 58 from 38 balls.

Albie Morkel and Doug Bollinger were the most impressive among the CSK bowlers; the former finished with figures of 2 for 12 from his four overs, while the latter would finish with 2 for 16 from his four-over spell. Ashwin, who has struggled on the pace-friendly conditions in the tournament, finished with respectable figures of none for 25 from his four overs.

Brief Scores: Yorkshire 140-6 in 20.0 overs (David Miller 28, Gary Ballance 58, Doug Bollinger 2-16, Albie Morkel 2-12) lost to Chennai Super Kings 141-6 in 19.0 overs (Suresh Raina 31, Badrinath 47, MS Dhoni 31, Iain Wardlaw 2-23, Oliver Hannon-Dalby 2-23) by 4 wickets.

Man of the Match: S Badrinath, for his 38-ball 47.

Chennai Super Kings win by 4 wickets

  • Raina: "MS told me to enjoy my captaincy and it was a great opportunity for me. We bowled really well, especially in the last four overs and saw things off with the bat. It is really disappointing that we haven't qualified."
  • Gale: "I thought we were 20 runs short, just when we got momentum we lost wickets. We were sloppy in the field which didn't help but congratulations to Chennai. We have loved it here, every one of us has gained experience."
