Chennai Super Kings vs Sydney Sixers - CLT20-2012 -  Match 3 Report:

Moises-Henriques-Man-of-the-Match-vs-CSK

An incredible assault from Moises Henriques was the highlight of the Sydney Sixers’ 14-run victory over the Chennai Super Kings. After being put in to bat, the Sixers posted 185 for five in their 20 overs, and then restricted their opponents to 171 for nine.

Despite being slow to get off the blocks, the Sydney Sixers finished with an astonishing flourish – scoring 61 runs in the final four overs. Henriques, who walked out to bat in the fourteenth over, didn’t hit a boundary in his first nine deliveries. But once he hit Ben Hilfehanus for a boundary straight back past him, the flood gates opened. He hit Ravichandran Ashwin for a flat six over long-on and then powered one inside out through extra-cover. In the following over – bowled by Doug Bollinger – he hit a boundary and sixes off successive deliveries. In the final over of the innings, he dispatched Ben Hilfenhaus for two boundaries to finish at 49 from 23 balls. He was ably assisted in that final surge by Steven Smith, who would be dismissed for 26 off the final delivery of the innings.

Earlier in the afternoon, Michael Lumb and Shane Watson set the platform for the innings – even if it wasn’t at T20 pace to begin with. Watson, who has been in dazzling form in recent times, continued to make merry; he hit five boundaries and two sixes and looked good for more before a direct hit from the boundary curtailed his innings prematurely; he made 46 off 30 balls.

Neil Maddinson and skipper Brad Haddin milked runs between overs nine and thirteen, before both batsmen would be dismissed in the fourteenth over. Maddinson made 12, before he lost his stumps to Ashwin, while Haddin scored 20 off 18 balls.

Ravindra Jadeja was the most economical of the CSK bowlers, while Ashwin would turn out to be the most successful with two wickets. Doug Bollinger, who bowled two magnificent overs at the start, conceded 32 runs in his remaining two overs. Faf du Plessis (0-35), Ben Hilfenhaus (1-26) and Vijaykumar Yo Mahesh (0-18) would make up the remaining overs.

In the aftermath of Henriques’ assault, the Chennai Super Kings were left with an asking rate of 9.68 runs per over. When Mitchell Starc hit the bottom of Murali Vijay’s stumps in the second over, the run-chase had started off on the wrong note. However, despite facing a mountain, Suresh Raina and Faf du Plessis maintained their poise, played some stunning shots and put up a fight.

Batting at three, du Plessis scored 43 off 25 balls and was involved in a 61-run partnership with Michael Hussey to bring his team back into the game. However, the Sydney Sixers forced their way into the match by dismissing both batsmen in quick succession.

Raina then dominated the partnership with S Badrinath; he contributed 43 runs in the 55-run partnership for the fourth wicket. He would bring up his half-century in 28 balls, aided with seven boundaries and two sixes. But Moises Henriques returned to kill the contest; he would dismiss Raina (57 off 33 balls), Badrinath and MS Dhoni to finish with figures of three for 23 from three overs. The Chennai Super Kings would finish at 171 for nine.

On the bowling front, Mitchell Starc too picked up three wickets, while Pat Cummins, Shane Watson and Steve O’Keefe chipped in with a wicket each.

  • Haddin: "It's always good to get off to a good start in tournaments, we didn't quite get everything right today but we got the win and will improve as the tournament goes on. Having wickets in hand really worked for us today as we were able to attack at the end. We will enjoy this win."
  • Dhoni: "We thought we gave away 15 runs too many at the end of the first innings, but that happens in this format. I think we batted really well, Hussey & Faf batted brilliantly up front and Raina was also brilliant after that. Those players kept us in the game but it was not to be today."
