Michael Neser replaces Josh Hazlewood in Australia's WTC 2023 final squad

Image
Josh Hazlewood, an Australian seamer, has been ruled out of the World Test Championship Final against India, which begins on June 7. Even though Hazlewood has been bowling at full speed in practice, he is dealing with a left Achilles problem in addition to the side strain he sustained during his recent IPL stint. With Australia playing the Ashes soon following the WTC Final, the cautious approach has been taken. Michael Neser, an in-form all-rounder, has been called up to the Australian squad and might be in contention for a berth in their playing XI over Scott Boland. The 33-year-old has recently been in excellent form for Glamorgan in the County Championship, picking up 19 wickets in five matches and smashing a century against Sussex in a recent match. Updated Australia squad: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey (wk), Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Travis Head, Josh Inglis (wk), Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy, Michael Neser, Steve Smith (vc), Mitche...

Australia were trailing by 187 runs with six wickets in hand at the end of day’s play in Brisbane after bowling India out in the morning. A rejuvenated Josh Hazlewood dominated the first session to return with a maiden five-wicket haul on debut. He was well complemented by Nathan Lyon to claim the remaining six visitors’ wickets and restrict them to 408 runs. Umesh Yadav then claimed three of Australia’s wickets while Ravichandran Ashwin picked one to keep the match evenly poised. When play was called off due to bad light, Steven Smith was batting on 65 with Mitchell Marsh on seven.   (Also See:  HIGHLIGHTS: AUSTRALIA VS INDIA - 2nd TEST, DAY 2, The Gabba, Brisbane ) India struck early in the second session and claimed the key wicket of the inform David Warner after the visitors took field. The opener looked in good nick as he repeatedly found the boundary especially off Ishant Sharma and scored at a quick pace. But his run was short lived as Umesh Yadav induced an edge w...

Propelled by Murali Vijay’s 144, India were 311/4 at stumps on Day 1 in Brisbane with Ajinkya Rahane (75*) and Rohit Sharma (26*) at the crease. While Rahane dominated later in the last session, Vijay guided India to a commanding position with a masterful knock. The opener once again played the role of a sheet anchor after MS Dhoni, back at the helm of the team elected to bat. The opener showed poise as he shouldered the responsibility of building the innings. Although he took his chances, Vijay settled into the role that he is fast making his own and impressed with some beautifully timed strokes until he was sent back in the third session.  (Also See:  HIGHLIGHTS: AUSTRALIA VS INDIA - 2nd TEST, DAY 1, The Gabba, Brisbane ) Earlier Vijay kept the first session in balance as he stitched an opening stand with Shikhar Dhawan. The pair watchfully negotiated the Mitchell Johnson-led attack which was not always as precise to lay a foundation. The Indian openers posted their firs...
