Cannot underestimate Bangladesh: Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik, who is a sure starter for India’s first game of 2014 Asia Cup, against Bangladesh, hopes to bring in freshness on the field for Team India, who are in Bangladesh after winless tours of South Africa and New Zealand. (Also Read: Asia Cup a big captaincy challenge: Virat Kohli)

Karthik, calling himself an “outsider”, said on the eve of the match that he was used to being summoned in the team at the last moment as an injury replacement. This time, he comes to replace the injured MS Dhoni.

"I got to know about it three-four days back,” Karthik said about his late selection in the squad. I guess I'm used to it now being called in so many times. It doesn't play on my mind too much.

"For me it's about coming out here... It's important to get into the zone just before the game. Obviously as a player I'm very excited to be a part of this Indian cricket team. It's one of the best teams available. For me, it's an honour to represent India and do the best that I can.

"From an outsider’s point of view, I'm coming into this team fresh. As an individual I can talk of my perspective and say that for me it's going to be exciting. I'm sure it's the same for all the players,” Karthik said.

Although Bangladesh have a history of inconsistent performances, the most recent one being their 0-3 loss to Sri Lanka in a home ODI series, Karthik refuses to take them lightly.

"Bangladesh are a fantastic one-day team,” Karthik said. “They had a couple of close games against Sri Lanka. Everybody knows that they are a very good one-day unit We all know they are a good one-day side and we will give them a lot of respect.”

The hosts will be without two of the star players against India, in Tamim Iqbal (rested) and Shakib Al Hasan (suspended). The Indian wicketkeeper, however, doesn’t feel their absence makes Bangladesh pushovers. "Tamim and Shakib are major players for Bangladesh. They are going to be replaced by two peoples who we may not know much."

India will take on Bangladesh at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah, a town in Narayangonj in the northern Dhaka. The venue hosted only five ODIs before the Asia Cup and a solitary Test. Karthik said he was looking forward to playing on a new ground.

"Except Bangladesh I don't think many teams would have played there... That's part of International cricket that you don't get to play in all the venues. It's one of those occasions for us it's going into a new venue and we're starting fresh. Having said that, we will go all guns blazing and do our best," Karthik said.
