India would be smarting from the shock loss in Mohali and Ishant Sharma would be feeling the heat after conceding a match-losing 30 runs in his last over. But given how high-scoring this series has been, India will do well to keep their chin up going into the fourth ODI.
While the Mohali loss is not likely to trigger too many changes in the playing XI, it might be the end of the long rope given to Ishant. With Mohammad Shami and Jaydev Unadkat waiting in the wings, Ishant might be asked to step away from the limelight and polish his skills. Although R Ashwin has not been at his best, MS Dhoni might want to persist with him given his recent experience of playing in Ranchi during the CLT20.
While there’s nothing to tamper with in the batting department, the Indian skipper will not be wrong to demand consistently high standards of fielding from his boys.
Australia
Australia required a miracle to upstage Dhoni’s magnificent knock in Mohali, and James Faulkner gave them just that. Although they have not put many steps wrong in this series, one record the visitors would want to set straight is the lack of big innings from their in-form batsmen.
While three Indians have registered centuries in the series so far, there isn’t a single ton against the name of an Aussie. The likes of Aaron Finch, Phillip Hughes and George Bailey should look to carry the innings on their back after getting off to good starts and augment the team score in the end.
As far as the team combination goes, there is no reason for Bailey to chop and change anything in his line-up.
Key Players
India
Ranchi hosted a bunch of CLT20 matches recently, and if the response these games got is anything to go by, one can expect the crowd to flock to the stadium to once again cheer for local lad, MS Dhoni. After his mesmerizing century in Mohali, the Ranchi natives would be excited at the prospect of another Dhoni special. However, whether or not Dhoni will get a chance to entertain his home crowd will depend on how India’s famed top five fare on the day.
Australia
While leather smashers like Finch and Faulkner have hogged the limelight, George Bailey has quietly made the biggest contribution to Australia’s two wins in the series. The unassuming Aussie skipper has 220 runs from three ODIs with an average of 110 at an excellent 114.58 runs per 100 balls. The stability that he provides to the Aussie innings at No.4 has been critical in them posting massive totals and gaining a lead in the series. He will be a key in the next match too, given Shane Watson’s patchy form with the bat at No.3.
