Thanks to Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten 71, India are poised to challenge Australia’s 1st innings tally of 380. The Little Master looked on song as he scored with equal ease against the spin and pace of the Australian bowlers. During today’s play, Tendulkar went past the landmark of 7000 runs on home soil – Ricky Ponting is the only other batsman to aggregate 7000-plus runs at home. Tendulkar also completed 3500 runs against the Aussies and brought up his 27th 50-plus score against the men from Down Under.

# Australia's 380 is their fourth highest total against India at Chepauk - the highest being 574 for seven wickets declared in September 1986. 

# Ravichandran Ashwin (7/103) has produced his career-best bowling figures in Tests, surpassing the 6 for 31 against New Zealand at Hyderabad in August 2012.

# Ashwin is the first Indian bowler to take 70 wickets after 13 Tests at an average of 30.64 - the strike rate being 60.5.

# In ten home Tests, Ashwin has claimed 61 wickets at an average of 25.90 - the strike rate being 52.9.

# Ashwin's superb figures of 7 for 103 are the third best by an Indian bowler against Australia at Chepauk, next only to the 8 for 84 by Harbhajan Singh in March 2001 and 7 for 48 by Anil Kumble in October 2004.

# Ashwin's aforesaid figures are the tenth best at Chepauk - the best being 8 for 55 by Vinoo Mankad against England in February 1952.

# Ashwin's figures of 7 for 103 are the seventh best by an Indian bowler against Australia in a Test innings - the best being 9 for 69 by Jasu Patel at Kanpur in December 1959.

# Peter Siddle and Michael Clarke were involved in a stand of 54 - Australia's second highest for the eighth wicket against India at Chepauk - the highest being 57 between Ian Healy and Shane Warne in March 1998.

# Michael Clarke has established a record for the highest individual innings by an Australian captain against India in India in Tests, obliterating Ricky Ponting's 123 at Bangalore in October 2008.

# Clarke's 130 is the fourth highest by an Australian player at Chepauk - the top three innings being 210 by Dean Jones in September 1986; 203 by Matthew Hayden in March 2001 and 162 by Allan Border in September 1979.

# Clarke's aforesaid innings is the second highest by a visiting captain at Chepauk, next only to Imran Khan's 135 not out in February 1987.  Overall, his innings is the fourth highest by a captain at this venue.  Sunil Gavaskar had recorded two hundreds at this venue as captain - 166 against Pakistan in January 1980 and 155 against Sri Lanka in September 1982.

# Since posting 80 at Sydney in January 2012, Sachin Tendulkar's innings  is his highest score against Australia in five innings.

# Sachin's 16th fifty against Australia is his 67th in Tests.

# Sachin has extended his world record of 118 innings of fifty-plus in Tests - 51 centuries + 67 fifties.

# Sachin, playing in his 89th Test, has completed his 7000 runs in Tests at home - 7011 at an average of 54.34 - the second batsman to accomplish the feat.  Ricky Ponting was the first to achieve the distinction - 7578 at an average of 56.97 in 92 Tests.

# Sachin is the second batsman after England's Jack Hobbs (3636 in 41 Tests) to complete 3500 runs against Australia in Tests - his tally being 3509 in 36 Tests.

# For the first time in his ten-Test career, Cheteshwar Pujara has failed to post a fifty in five consecutive innings - his sequence of scores being 6, 16, 8 & 26 vs England and 44 vs Australia.

# Pujara is averaging 57.50 in ten Tests played by him till date - his aggregate being 805 runs in sixteen innings, including three centuries and a fifty.

# The 93-run partnership for the third wicket between Sachin and Pujara might turn out to be a match-saving stand for India - their fourth highest against Australia for this wicket-position at Chepauk - the highest being 113 between Rahul Dravid and Sachin in March 1998.

# James Pattinson, for the first time, has dismissed the top three batsmen as 'bowled' in the same innings.  Only once in his career before the Chennai Test, he had claimed the wickets of three batsmen as bowled in an innings - in New Zealand's first innings score of 150 at Hobart in December 2011.

# Virat Kohli's second fifty against Australia is his sixth in Tests.

# Kohli, in his last four innings against Australia, has recorded three innings of 50-plus - his sequence of scores being 75, 116, 22 & 50 not out.
