Highveld Lions vs Sydney Sixers Match 10 Report - CLT20-2012:

The Sydney Sixers carried on their impressive run in the Karbonn CLT20 after they beat the Highveld Lions by five wickets at Durban. After restricting the Lions to 137, the visitors knocked off the required runs in 19 overs to register a convincing win. With this victory – their third in three CLT20 matches – the Sixers became the first team to confirm a place in the knock-outs.

Chasing a modest 138, the Sixers got off to a cautious start with Michael Lumb and Shane Watson scoring just 11 runs in the first three overs. Watson then opened his shoulders as he would get stuck into Chris Morris; after scoring two boundaries in the 25-year-old pacer’s first over, he dispatched him for two boundaries and a six in his second over.

At 59 for no loss in eight overs, the Sixers were in cruise mode. That was when Aaron Phangiso struck twice in his first over to bring his team back into the game; the left-arm spinner, who was impressive in both the matches against the IPL teams – first castled Lumb (22) and then had Dominc Thornely stumped down the leg-side. He dismissed Watson in his following over when the opener top-edged an attempted sweep that was pouched by the wicketkeeper. Watson made 47 from 38 balls and hit four boundaries and three sixes.

The Sixers’ skipper Brad Haddin (32) hit Jean Symes for three consecutive sixes during his 21-ball cameo, before he holed out to the man at long-on. Moises Henriques then hit two boundaries through the leg-side, before he dragged a Chris Morris delivery back on to his stumps. Steve Smith (25 off 25 balls) and Neil Maddinson then duly finished off the business.

Aaron Phangiso, whose reputation has grown leaps and bounds in this tournament, was the Lions’ best bowler; he finished with figures of 3 for 14 from his four overs. Dirk Nannes (1-16) and Morris were the other wicket-takers.

Earlier in the afternoon, continuing from his match-winning 64 against the Chennai Super Kings, Gulam Bodi scored yet another half-century to power the Highveld Lions to 137. The 33-year-old played some powerful strokes through the leg-side in his 44-ball knock. After starting off with a flurry of boundaries, the left-hander settled down to play a long innings; he would be dismissed in the 18th over, but not before he had scored 61.

The left-hander was involved in several partnerships along the way. He added 25 runs with captain Alviro Petersen (who would offer Brad Haddin the first of his four catches of the evening), and then dominated the 32-run partnership with Quinton de Kock.

This was when the southpaw decided to reign himself in; after dominating the earlier two partnerships, he chose to play second fiddle to Neil McKenzie who scored 17. The innings lacked momentum in the middle overs with wickets continuing to tumble. Jean Symes hit three boundaries and a six in his 16-ball cameo, before he would lose his off stump to Mitchell Starc; he made 23. A lower-order collapse – Sohail Tanvir, Thami Tsolekile and Aaron Phangiso would all be dismissed for ducks – meant the Lions only managed 17 runs in the last three overs.

Mitchell Starc, who finished with three wickets in his four-over spell, was the most impressive of the Sydney Sixers’ bowlers. Josh Hazelwood and Shane Watson too chipped in with two wickets each, while Moises Henriques accounted for the wicket of Zander de Bruyn.

Brief Scores: Highveld Lions 137-9 in 20 overs (Gulam Bodi 61, Mitchell Starc 2-18, Shane Watson 2-25) lost to Sydney Sixers 141-5 in 19 overs (Shane Watson 47, Brad Haddin 32, Aaron Phangiso 3-14) by 5 wickets.

Man of the Match: Mitchell Starc for his impressive four-over spell, during which he picked up three wickets.

Sydney Sixers win by 5 wickets

  • Haddin: "I thought we were very good in patches today but still also not so good. We were pretty happy with the total we needed to chase, our quicks were outstanding again today. We are thinking about the Semi Finals now."
  • Petersen: "We had a good start, but just a few bad overs with bat and ball cost us today and that's what this format is all about. Aaron Phangiso is very underrated and he has done very well for us so far."
