India v WI -2011 2nd ODI Preview
What
The second One-Day International of the five-match series between India and West Indies
When
December 2, 2011. The game begins at 14:30 pm, IST. It is a day-night affair
Where
Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam. If one goes by the evidence of the three ODIs played over here previously, this match ought to be a high-scoring one. India enjoy the distinction of posting the highest total in an innings here (356 for nine against Pakistan). Additionally, every one of the six innings in those three ODIs has seen sides post a score of 250-plus.
The Teams
India bowled exceptionally well to keep the West Indies down to 211 after Darren Bravo and Danza Hyatt threatened to take them to a more robust total in the Cuttack ODI. R Ashwin, who finished with figures of 10-1-30-1, was always going to be a handful for the visitors and to add to that the solid performances of Umesh Yadav (8-1-33-2) and Ravindra Jadeja (10-1-42-1) will give captain Virender Sehwag immense confidence in his bowling resources.
However, Sehwag’s biggest concern might be his own ODI batting form. After a sizzling 175 in India’s opening World Cup game against Bangladesh in February, the swashbuckling batsman has scored only one half-century in his last eight innings as opener.
The visitors’ bowlers also stood equal to their Indian counterparts and nearly pulled off an improbable win for their side. However, with legspinner Anthony Martin going for 20 runs in his first two overs while opening the bowling alongside Kemar Roach, the West Indies might opt for a strategy shift by bringing Martin on to bowl in the middle overs instead.
Finally, if the visitors’ batsmen can convert their starts into bigger contributions, something which they failed to do in the first ODI, we will have a real contest on our hands.
Trivia
In the nine ODIs he has played this year, Virender Sehwag has dispatched the very first ball he has faced to the boundary on six occasions.
West Indies have lost a match by one wicket on eight occasions – more than any other side in ODIs.
